Before the Dzong was built sometime in 1950s, Zhongkhar Dzong, which is in ruins now, was the administrative centre. The town of Mongar is located on a hill. It serves as a gateway to Lhuntse, another district, 77 kilometres from Mongar which is notably famed for its weavers and special textiles and fabrics. The kurtoe region of Lhuntse is also the heartland of the Royal Dynasty.
